World Environment Day, celebrated
annually on June 5th, serves as a global platform for raising awareness and
encouraging action for the protection of our environment. In line with the
United Nations' theme for 2025, "Putting
an End to Plastic Pollution," Namrup College organized a series of
impactful activities to engage students and college fraternity in promoting
environmental stewardship and addressing the critical issue of plastic waste.
This report outlines activities undertaken, participation and outcomes stemming
from these initiatives. The progamme was inaugurated by Mr. Hijam Homendro
Singh, Retd. Head of the Department of Department of Zoology, Namrup College
and in his inaugural speech Mr. Hijam Homendro Singh emphasized on importance
of awareness on plastic pollution. This programme was hosted by Sajidur Rahman,
Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Namrup College.
Programme Highlights:
1. Awareness Session on
Post-Plantation Care
The day commenced with an interactive
session focused on post-plantation care. Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, HoD &
Assistant Professor of Department of Botany demonstrated practical tips on
nurturing newly planted saplings in front of the faculties of the College and
student volunteers. Topics included watering schedules, soil mulching, use of
organic compost and protection from pests.
2. Plantation Drive in the Campus
A plantation drive followed
the awareness session. Mr. Hijam Homendro Singh, Retd. Head of the Department
of Department of Zoology, faculties and students planted saplings of
indigenous tree species across designated green zones within the campus. It was
decided that the responsibility for ongoing care was assigned to student
groups.
3. Campus Cleaning Drive: Towards a
Plastic-Free Campus
In line with the 2025 theme, a comprehensive
campus cleaning drive was carried out. Volunteers were provided with
gloves, waste bags, and sorting bins. They cleaned classrooms, pathways,
gardens, and common areas, with a focus on collecting and segregating single-use
plastics. Posters and signboards promoting “Say No to Plastic” were also
placed around the campus.
- Over
26 students and 16 faculty members participated actively.
- Increased
Awareness: The activities
significantly raised awareness among the college community about the
severity of plastic pollution, the importance of tree plantation, and the
necessity of post-plantation care.
- Cleaner
Campus: The cleaning drive
resulted in a visibly cleaner and more pleasant campus environment, with a
significant reduction in littered plastic.
- Enhanced
Green Cover: The plantation of new
saplings will contribute to the campus's green cover, improving air
quality and biodiversity in the long run.
- Community
Engagement: The events fostered a
strong sense of community spirit and collective responsibility towards environmental
protection.
- Skill
Development: Participants in the
post-plantation care session gained practical knowledge about nurturing
plants.
- Visible
Action on Theme: The direct action against
plastic pollution through the cleaning drive tangibly addressed the World
Environment Day 2025 theme.
- Awareness about plastic pollution and sustainable living was
significantly increased among the campus community.

Conclusion:
The celebration of World
Environment Day 2025 at Namrup College was a resounding success. The
combination of education, action, and community involvement ensured that
the message of reducing plastic pollution reached a wide audience. The college
remains committed to continuing such green initiatives and promoting environmental
stewardship throughout the academic year. The meeting was concluded with vote
of thanks from Sajidur Rahman, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology,
Namrup College.
