Namrup College Observes World Environment Day 2026 with Strong Campaign Against Parthenium Invasion

Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and community outreach, Namrup College celebrated World Environment Day 2026 through a series of awareness and biodiversity restoration programmes in neighbouring educational institutions. The activities were conducted at Namrup Public High School and Kawaimari High School, aiming to transfer scientific knowledge from research laboratories to grassroots communities and inspire environmental stewardship among young learners.

World Environment Day 2026 is being observed globally under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”, with a strong emphasis on climate action and ecosystem restoration.

In alignment with this global call, Namrup College highlighted the urgent need to protect local biodiversity from the rapid spread of the invasive and noxious weed Parthenium hysterophorus. The college has been implementing a long-term action plan since 2025 to assess, manage and ultimately eradicate Parthenium from Namrup and its surrounding areas. Recognizing the alarming expansion of this invasive species, the institution utilized World Environment Day as an opportunity to educate school students, teachers and local residents about its ecological, agricultural and health hazards.

During the programme, Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Mr. Sajidur Rahman, and Dr. Susmita Thakur delivered informative lectures on environmental conservation, biodiversity protection and the adverse impacts of Parthenium invasion. They also conducted practical demonstrations on the safe physical removal of Parthenium, emphasizing the importance of personal protective measures during handling and disposal. Students and teachers enthusiastically participated in the awareness sessions and field demonstrations.

Earlier in the day, at 9:00 a.m., Namrup College organized a special awareness programme during the morning assembly on the college campus. Addressing the gathering, Ms. Dipti Dutta Saikia spoke on various contemporary environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and the responsibility of youth in building a sustainable future.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jayanta Sonowal emphasized that conservation efforts should go beyond ceremonial tree planting and evolve into sustained community participation. He noted that controlling invasive species such as Parthenium is essential for restoring native biodiversity and safeguarding ecosystem health in the region.

Through its continuous environmental outreach programmes, research-based interventions and community engagement initiatives, Namrup College is steadily emerging as a catalyst for environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation in Upper Assam. The college reaffirmed its commitment to creating an environmentally conscious society by connecting scientific research with grassroots action and encouraging collective responsibility towards nature and future generations.
