Namrup College, under the leadership of the Institution Innovation Cell (IIC) and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized the Annual Innovation Day on 15th October 2025. On this special occasion, a programme was arranged to create awareness among the faculty members and students. The event was hosted by Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Coordinator, IQAC, and presided over by Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi, Principal, Namrup College. After assuming the chair, the Principal invited Dr. Jayanta Sonowal to present the objectives of the programme.
Then, Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi delivered the inaugural speech with thought-provoking insights. He urged all faculty members and students to dedicate themselves to innovative activities. He broadly explained what innovation is. He brought to light Shri Shri Mahapurush Sankardeva for his ideas and scientific thoughts that evolved in the 14th century in a state like Assam. Sankardeva made several contributions to structuring and reforming Assamese society and culture. Dr. Gogoi said that all the contributions he made were the products of innovative thinking.
The programme continued with a seminar presentation by Dr. Susmita Thakur, Assistant Professor of Zoology, who shared insights from her recent publication that has gained wide attention among scientists in Biological and Medical Sciences. Her paper, titled “Death to Bite: A Case Report of Dead Snake Envenoming and Treatment”, was published on 19th August 2025. The study provided valuable understanding of the danger posed by dead snakes that can still inflict venomous bites several hours after death due to their cold-blooded nature. Dr. Thakur emphasized the need for extreme caution while handling dead snakes during disposal.
Dr. Ankur Nath, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, delivered a seminar on “Judicious Use of Electricity to Reduce Power Consumption.” He meticulously examined the use of various electrical appliances within the college, presenting a clear and simple analysis of their power consumption and the associated costs. His presentation effectively highlighted practical measures to promote energy efficiency in the campus.
Another innovative initiative of the college is the creation of departmental blogs to enhance digital presence. Guided by IQAC, almost all departments have developed their own blogs using free online tools such as Blogger. This effort aims to establish a digital repository for sharing departmental activities, resources, and publications that will benefit students, the general public, and serve as a valuable archive for future reference.
Research being a vital component of higher education, Namrup College has given due priority to developing a research culture among students. The college introduced the IQAC Students’ Research Grant in 2022, and the second phase of the grant has recently been released based on merit. Five departments—Botany, Economics, Mathematics, Political Science, and Zoology—have been selected under this initiative to encourage student-led research and innovation.
At the closing speech, Chairperson Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi shared his feelings after observing all the talks and presentations of the day. He expressed that the work done during the day also reflected the innovative ideas of the teachers. He emphasized that faculty members and students should invest more time in innovation and new ideas.
On this remarkable day, the college proudly showcased these innovative activities as part of its ongoing commitment to fostering research, creativity, and academic excellence. Such efforts will undoubtedly contribute to nurturing competent researchers and responsible citizens for the nation.
The observation day was wind up with vote of thanks speech delivered by Mr. Sajidur Rahman, Convener of Institution Innovation Cell (IIC).
